Way back in June of 1999, on a scorching hot blacktop in Quantico, Virginia, Sergeant Instructor Staff Sergeant James bellowed “Be internally compelled, not externally controlled!”

Fighting my body’s desire to pass out in the 110° heat index weather while standing in formation while at the position of attention taught me a whole new appreciation for being “internally compelled.”

While I know that I have not quite mastered this lesson, I know that I get a little better at it every year.

Whether you are mentally, physically, or spiritually worn, do not allow yourself to be tossed around by the waves of life by the things outside your sphere of influence.
